Because of Him

Area: Leon Valley/9th Ward
Companion: Sister Nicholette Scott

It's official, I've passed 18 months... I can hardly believe I've been on my mission this long.

Words cannot express the joy I feel right now. We had the opportunity to go to {A}'s baptism last Saturday. The Johnson's took us and we brought {M} along to see it too. It was wonderful to see Valley Hi again. {A} has come so far, and has overcome so much to get to the point where she is at now. The moment we walked in, it was a joyful reunion. I could not wipe the smile off my face the entire service.

What is the gate that leads to the path of eternal life? Repentance and baptism. {A} is a beautiful example of one who has "[pressed] forward, that [she] might obtain the path which led unto the tree..." (1 Nephi 8:21)

After the baptism we talked about it with {M}, who also will be getting baptized soon. She told us that all her life there have been gaps that no one has been able to fill. But now as she is learning about the gospel, she recognizes that those gaps are being filled.

Our purpose is to "teach repentance, and baptize converts." This is who we are and this is why we are here. I am so grateful for our Savior, Jesus Christ who paved the way for us to live in His presence again. It is only through Christ that we can be saved. It is because of him that we can become clean from our sins and enjoy his peace in this life, and the life to come. But we first must enter the gate. Repentance and baptism by one holding the priesthood authority of God. Moroni is a wonderful example of teaching repentance and baptizing converts. He said,

"Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God."
Moroni 10:32

Because of Him

I love teaching the message of the restoration. It is true, and it fills even the most desolate heart with hope. As covenant Israel, we are the message. I felt an even deeper conviction of this when we stood outside an apartment and taught a man who we had met in passing. The power of the message sprang forth from our mouths and our hearts, and the Holy Ghost carried it into his own heart. As we stood there out in the open, listening to him and preaching repentance, we could see the light begin to grow in his eyes. I was overwhelmed with gratitude. Once again, the spirit bore witness to me of the truthfulness of these things. We then boldly declared that we are servants of God, called by a prophet to preach our unique message to the world. He understood what we were saying, and asked a few questions here and there, signifying the hunger he has for knowledge. We will continue to teach him, as he has agreed to meet with us.

I never could have guessed that I would be capable of feeling such profound love for these people. It is a feeling I've never felt before. One that has changed my life, and has impacted me for eternity. I will forever be a servant of the Lord, Jesus Christ. My life is his.

Sincerely,
Sister Record

So Great a Cause!

Area: Leon Valley/9th Ward
Companion: Sister Nicholette Scott

Dear family and friends,

What does it mean to live the gospel? To answer that question allow me to pose another question. What is the gospel? We could rack our minds for the perfect definition of the gospel of Jesus Christ and make it flowery and poetic. But the gospel is very simple. So simple that a young child could comprehend it. It is this: Faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.

This doctrine is stated again and again in the scriptures.

"...I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism--yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.
"...He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved."
(2 Nephi 31:13, 15)

To endure to the end means to continually exercise faith in Jesus Christ, repent, renew our covenants, and choose to receive the Holy Ghost. This has become very real to me this past week. Especially the past couple days. To live the gospel means to endure to the end. As I have been studying and learning this principle for myself, it was a glorious experience to partake of the sacrament yesterday. The renewal I felt was beyond description. I now know what it means to live the gospel. And I love it.

Our purpose as missionaries is to preach the gospel! Which is what has been stated above. While we were sitting outside the pharmacy a couple days ago waiting for a pharmacist to show up, a woman approached and was also waiting. We were updating some digital records at the time, but I could sense that she was curious about who we were. I was distinctly aware that she was watching us. I turned to her and began a casual conversation. I simply asked if she had had a happy new year. She smiled and said that she did. I told her we did as well and explained that we were on church missions. I went on to explain that on a mission we have the opportunity to serve people everyday and teach about Jesus Christ. She seemed sincerely touched and said, "Oh, that is very good!". I asked her if she had a faith in Christ. She replied that she did and that she was raised with a faith in him. That eventually led to us inviting her to come to church. We had a wonderful conversation with her and ended up writing the address to the church down and giving it to her. For that brief moment in the store, we were able to preach the gospel to someone "by the way". Meaning, wherever we're at and whatever people come into our path. It was so simple. There are times when it might not be appropriate to approach someone and begin teaching them the entire first lesson, but we can be friendly, lift them where they are, and invite them to come unto Christ. Such was this experience.

Last Monday we met a less active member who is going through a lot. We were without a car for the time being, so we walked. We stopped by several people but none were home. Finally we got to {A}'s home. She is an older woman who has a lot on her plate right now. Shortly after we had arrived she received a phone call of sad news from her sister, who's health is failing. She hung up the phone and began to cry. We were there to comfort her. We bore our testimonies of the Book of Mormon, and the solace it brings to the storms of life. We gently discussed that more important than temporal welfare is spiritual welfare. She agreed. We boldly invited her to come back to the fold of God and attend church with us the following Sunday. Again, she agreed. It was touching to see the light grow in her eyes as the fire of the restoration burned deep in our own. It is my hope that others will always be able to warm theirs hands by my bonfire. To help illustrate the message of the Book of Mormon, we shared a video of the testimony of a special witness of Jesus Christ. It is stirring to hear this apostle, Jeffery R. Holland testify of the living reality of this book. Which is indeed the very word of God. The Book of Mormon is true and is the tool by which God is gathering his people. I have been gathered and will never turn back. Now it is my duty to assist in gathering others.

Testimony from an Apostle of Jesus Christ

May we remember the words of the prophet Joseph Smith who said,

"shall we not go on in so great a cause? Go forward and not backward. Courage brethren [and sisters]; and on, on to victory! Let your hearts rejoice and be exceedingly glad... For the prisoners shall go free." (D&C 128:22)

I am ready to preach the gospel!

Love,
Sister Record

This was a very cold night. I think the chill is beginning to set in here in Texas. :)

I feel so blessed to have been invited to attend MLC. It was incredible to discuss our vision as a mission. Even though I don't have the same kind of stewardship that I did before, it was neat to see how everything still applies.

The "quadpanionship". Previous south zone leadership. Let me tell you, this was a powerful team! Unbelievable miracles happened when we all were together. Interestingly enough, all four of us were unassigned. I think President Slaughter is  trying to teach us something important... A Savior is Born

Area: Valley Hi/Heritage
Companion: Sister Sara Risenmay

It has been a wonderful week! Hearts are soft this Christmas season and lives are touched like no other time of year. Christmas time is the best time to be a missionary! It's almost as though the lights and the excitement ignite in each person a desire to love God and partake of His light.

Last Wednesday our district leader inspired us with this profound insight. (Paraphrasing) 'Right now, there is a Father who is on his knees begging for guidance for his family. There is a mother in tears, pleading with God for her and her children to find refuge.' We are the Lords servants, sent to find them. We are "like unto angels of God" with a divine commission. May we never forget the greatness of our call! As full times missionaries, but more importantly, as members of Christ's church and as covenant Israel, we were born to gather. That day I had an exchange with Sister Fullam. I felt in my heart that we were going to find the searching Father that very day. In the car, I looked at Sister Fullam and said, "We are going to find that Father or Mother today". The spirit bore witness to our hearts of our purpose.

While we were stopping by some people, none of them were home. We began walking back to our car, but not without having our eyes, ears and hearts open to anyone else we could talk to before leaving. Across the street we saw a somewhat rough looking man walking to the bus stop. The street was a very wide street and usually bustling with traffic. This time there were no cars and we were able to cross with ease. We approached him and began talking about Christ in this Christmas season. We found out that he was going through a really hard time, and seemed to be barely hanging on, only because of his faith in Jesus Christ. We showed him "A Savior is Born" and watched as the spirit worked in him. Tears filled his eyes. He knew immediately that we were sent from God. We testified to him that God knows his circumstances and that we represent the Savior in bringing this glad message. He readily accepted a Book of Mormon and agreed to read it. He was deeply touched and could hardly contain his emotions as we offered a prayer for him. Sister Fullam and I walked away in awe of what the Lord had just done for this man. We don't know for sure if he's a Father, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was. His faith was lifted, and we hope to begin teaching him soon.

A Savior is Born

Last week I mentioned the family of 6 that we met. The {C} family came to church yesterday! When we first met them, Brother {C} offered a beautiful prayer, pleading for understanding and ability to guide his family in this new path. We were not expecting them to come to church, so when we saw them we could barely contain our excitement. It was a miracle! Those kids have almost no religious background. So coming to church is completely new to them. We were so very grateful for the members who went out of their way to say hello and help them feel welcome. That is so very vital. I hope no one ever lets somebody go unnoticed. It is a tragedy when someone who's heart is already fragile leaves because no one would lend a hand of love.

We had a lesson with them after church about the Plan of Salvation. We look forward to the day they are baptized and become some of the best kingdom builders!

{H} is doing fantastic. The only thing keeping her from being baptized is that her family isn't in town until January. She is going to be baptized though. No doubt about that. {A} and {T} are doing well. We lost contact with them for almost two weeks, but finally taught them again. {A} is as excited as ever and is still reading the Book of Mormon.

I am grateful for the knowledge we have of the Savior. He is our Redeemer. He was born in Bethlehem and was laid in an animals feeding trough. Also known as a manger. He is Alpha and Omega. He lives. Because he lives, I can sing the song of redeeming love.

I love you all!

Sincerely,
Sister Record

All in!

Transfer to San Antonio

Area: Valley Hi/Heritage
Companion: Sister Riley Powell

I have officially been transferred away from Georgetown. It will forever own a piece of my heart, but I know that this is where I need to be. I am back in San Antonio covering two wards again. Valley Hi and Heritage. Interestingly enough I came to Valley Hi on an exchange in my second transfer when I was still in training. It is completely different than where I just came from. I have grown to love the Austin area, but I'm growing to love it here too. The moment I got here, it was reminded me of Converse, my first area. My new companion is Sister Riley Powell, and we are both serving as sister training leaders.

We live with some other sisters. Sister Smith, who I lived with before in Converse, and her companion Sister Martin. :)

This week has been wonderful. I love sharing the gospel, and I love telling people about the Book of Mormon! The Book of Mormon is the tool by which Israel is being gathered. While Sister Powell and I were in a smaller neighborhood we came across a man who has Christian roots and is very firm in where he stands. As we shared with him the Book of Mormon my heart sang with joy at declaring these glad tidings. This son of God had the opportunity to accept one of the most precious gifts from our Heavenly Father, another testament of his son Jesus Christ, untainted by the apostasy. He did not accept the Book, nor the invitation to learn more. But someday he may. I LOVE testifying of the restored gospel and of Jesus Christ. It doesn't phase me in the slightest when one chooses to reject the offer. Yes, it does make me sad to know what they are truly rejecting, but my love for God and for his work overpowers any hint of discouragement. I know that our divine commission is to find those who are prepared.

Gathering of Israel

The Lord is gathering his elect from the four corners of the Earth. I know that to be true as I have seen some of his most elect come into the waters of baptism and change their lives.

I have seen it in more subtle ways. Such as 20 copies of the Book of Mormon lasting us for six weeks when we must have passed out 4 a day. I have seen it in the eyes of a child as their perspective of Heavenly Father changes. Others may not have come all the way, but their lives were touched in one way or another. I've seen it in the growth and change of my companions and the things we learn together.

I loved meeting the people in the wards we're serving. I've learned that it is silly to sit back and wait for people to come get to know us. It is much more proactive to get up and go get to know them. I will forever live by that. I will not wait to be acted upon, I will act. "And men are instructed sufficiently that they know good from evil... Wherefore, the Lord gave unto man that he should act for himself..." (2 Nephi 2:5, 16) There are wonderful people here whom I feel privileged to serve and work in harmony with. The work of salvation is for all of us. Members are missionaries too.

In our mission we do mission studies. Meaning that occasionally President Slaughter asks us to study a particular set of scriptures, or a particular subject. He'll usually give a time frame, and ask questions throughout. It is always very enlightening. Our most recent mission study has been on the "For the strength of Youth" pamphlet. He invited us to highlight words that refer to agency and to notice the emphasis the brethren place in standing alone. I really gained a lot out of this study. Here are some thoughts I have had:

"Though the world is getting more and more tumultuous with the adversary working in the hearts of man, righteousness is growing. The light of the gospel of Jesus Christ is stronger than it has ever been. Members of the church will cease holding the iron rod, preferring the great and spacious building, and allowing themselves to be blinded by the philosophies of men. But Jesus Christ's Church is perfect and will never fall. The priesthood will never be taken from the Earth again.

How will we be an influence for good not just in the world, but within the church? It begins with the strength of youth. As children of the covenant we have a divine and sacred responsibility to assist in gathering lost Israel. We were chosen before the world began to be members of Christ's church and to spread the gospel to the world. The Lord has great trust in the youth and often calls upon them to carry out his great work.

If I had understood this when I was a teenager I would have looked at myself, others, and the world much differently. I'm grateful for parents and leaders who helped me learn who I am. We have a responsibility to help the youth see their divine nature. Many of them do not understand who they are as covenant Israel. They are learning and trying to grow in a complex world. One way that we can be an influence for good within the church is by teaching the youth that they are noble and great. We must show them through example how to gain a testimony for themselves. Through this study, my vision of the youth of Zion has changed. I know who I am. I can see the divine nature of who we are. I feel a great responsibility to encourage and strengthen the youth in word and deed. To shine bright, so that they too can be gathered themselves, then assist in gathering the rest of lost Israel. Because that is what we were born to do."

There are three things I want y'all to never forget.

One: The success is in the invitation.
Two: There are angels among us.
Three: Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith.

I love you all!

Sincerely,
Sister Record

The Miracle of the Library

Area: Serenada/Georgetown
Companion: Sister Jessy Montclair

It has been another miraculous week here in the TSAM (Texas San Antonio Mission). I do not know how I got so lucky to come to the best mission on Earth. I'm proud to be a TSAMer.

{D} and his kids are doing great! {D} is getting baptized this Friday. He is solid. Due to some complications, the children's baptism will be delayed. But their progress certainly won't. The good news with that is he will be able to baptize them when their time comes. :) Family home evening went very well last week with them. We taught tithing, which they readily accepted. The ward is really taking them in.

Sister Snyder and Sister Record

A couple weeks ago we were in an RV park way up in the boonies, contacting a referral. We didn't end up meeting the referral, but we saw a guy outside. He seemed genuinely touched that we had stopped to talk to him. Come to find out, he's a member! He was baptized years ago, but hasn't been involved in any religion since. He is a scientist, and is analytical by nature. He couldn't meet right then, so we set up a return appointment for a couple weeks later. Which in missionary time, is a long time! But the other day, we had that lesson with him. We got there and forgot to bring another woman with us. He works in the heat, and so we decided to meet at the library. The lesson with him was incredible. He has been a lost sheep for so long that he didn't barely comprehended the concept of God. We focused on that and the spirit was really strong. We taught the restoration. It was amazing to see the Holy Ghost working as everything we taught was so familiar to him, and he really wanted to know the truth. He is so sincere, and ready to come back to the fold of God.

Near the end of the lesson we were reading Moroni 10:3-5, which talks about asking God with a sincere heart and how he will manifest the truth through the power of the Holy Ghost. A young man had been standing at a nearby window, when he walked up to us and asked if he could join us. That does not happen every day! Sister Montclair and I were so taken aback, but immediately responded, "Absolutely!" He pulled up a chair and told us that he doesn't hear people talk about God very often in a public place. He expressed that he didn't know why he had come to that window, which was in a quiet corner of the library away from all the books. When he heard us taking about God he debated whether or not to join us. He said, "I told God that if my bible is in my backpack, I'll join them." As he spoke he pulled out his bible. Lately, he explained, he has come back to God and knows that he needs to have an open mind. Since we were at the end of the lesson with {J}, the less active member, we explained the background of the Book of Mormon and gave him a copy. We ended the lesson with a prayer so {J} could get going, but asked {S}, the kid who joined us, to stay so we could teach him one-on-one. He received the message of the restoration well and even agreed to be baptized. What a MIRACLE!! We weren't even walking around looking, he just WALKED UP to us! We were at the library for a couple hours, and when Sister Montclair and I came out. We looked at each other with big smiles and exclaimed, "What just happened?!" We were on cloud nine for a while.

Yesterday we were out working and had to use the restroom. We cleverly decided to ask a less active member if we could use theirs. We looked in our book to see who was closest, and picked a part-member family. The Dad is the only member. His wife and two kids are not. At first they seemed a little uncomfortable, but warmed up fairly quickly as we had friendly chit-chat. The conversation kept going, and they told us about their church. Before leaving we asked if we could share the video "Because He Lives".

After watching, the spirit was really strong. We asked them what they liked, and the Mom broke down crying. That morning she had been praying for guidance. She has wanted so badly for years for her family to go to church together, but she just didn't know where to find it. She wants to meet with us because she knows we were sent by God. Wow, prepared! That video was inspiring and helped that family so much. Before showing them the video, I felt an overwhelming impression that this family is prepared. I could see in my minds eye the Dad becoming active again, and mom and kids being baptized. There was a moment when I looked into her eyes and testified that God loves her, and we embraced for a long time. Amazing.

I stand before you, in spirit, with an absolute sure and unwavering knowledge that God hears the pleas of each of his children. I know that he lives. I don't just believe it any more, I know it. The love I have felt for these people is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I cannot describe the depth of the emotions within me. All I can say is that I am a witness. He lives, he loves me. He loves each of his children. The blood of the restoration flows in my veins. The blood of Christ has cleansed me. I can say with confidence that I am a new person, and I am clean. He is real. I love my Savior. I love his work.

I love you all. Thanks for all you do, and for always seeking opportunities to reach out and share the gospel. I know you have and will be blessed as a result. Keep it up.

Sincerely,
Sister Record, servant of the Lord.

Baptism and Invitations

Area: Serenada/Georgetown
Companion: Sister Raelynn Pito
Companion: Sister Rachel Bills

Sorry this is late today! We went to Burger University with some Sisters in the Serenada ward. It is fantastic! It kind of reminded me of the Disney movie, Monsters University. The menu is so cute! I decided that after my mission, I'm bringing y'all back with me to Georgetown because it is so full of fun things. Afterwards we went to a cute thrift store and explored the courthouse. We took some fun pictures.

Sister Record at the courthouse

This Father's Day season, I'd like to take a moment to recognize all the things I love about my Dad.

I remember watching my Dad hold my baby brother in such a gentle way, with his arms wrapped around his tiny body. Somewhere in my memory I remember being held like that, encircled in the fatherly arms of safety. That feeling has never left me. Wherever I am, whatever I'm experiencing, I know that his arms will always be open. Dad, through your example, I have learned of my Father in Heaven's love for me. From a toddler at Burger King, to a soon-to-be missionary at the temple, Daddy-Daughter dates are priceless gems of eternal worth. Spending time with the family has always been your highest priority. There have been countless days where you came home after a long day of work and played with us kids, other days you came home early to help out around the house, or even took the day off when we needed more family time, or someone was sick. I will never forget the love and attention you give me when ever I talk. You turn away from whatever you're doing and give me your full attention. Those many hours of helping me with math homework, of talking to me about dating a man who loves his mother, and discussing the principles of the gospel have taught me so much. The first time I really started studying the Book of Mormon was after I saw you taking your own personal study time consistently every morning. Thank you for your love. You will always be Daddy to me, but how grateful I am for a Father who cares, lifts, and supports all those around him. I love you, Dad. And Happy Fathers Day! This video is for you.

This week we did have a baptism! I'm glad y'all got the pictures. :) Everything about the baptism was a miracle. {J}, (the woman who was baptized) had been meeting with the Elders before we came into the area. They prepared her beautifully. There came a point where she stopped progressing, and they moved on with faith. Our first Sunday in the Georgetown ward Elder and Sister Adair pointed her out to us and told us that she was an investigator. She came to church with one goal in mind. And that was to pay tithing. She did, and the next week she came to church again. She related to us a huge blessing she had seen after paying her tithing and knew that it was from the Lord. We still hadn't met with her ourselves at that point. As she talked to us the spirit distinctly impressed upon our minds that we needed to meet with her and that she was ready to start progressing again. That week we discussed what step to take with her. We felt that we needed to invite her to be baptized the following Saturday, which was a week and a half away. Our first lesson with her was powerful as she accepted the invitation to be baptized in a week. We met with her every day after that to ensure that she would be ready. It was amazing to see the Lord work in her. At the time we asked her, there was still a lot she needed to understand. Each time we felt unsure, the spirit reassured us that she was ready. As we asked her the baptismal interview questions it became clear that she was ready. Day after day we taught her. By Friday, an amazing transformation occurred in her. Her faith is so pure and so strong. Her baptism was beautiful. We stood at the font to watch her be baptized. A flood of emotion washed over me as she came up out of the water. This experience is a testimony to me that the Lord prepares his children. {J} is an incredible light to those around her, and is eager to learn and to help others. I know that we were meant to be here at this time to help her enter the waters of baptism.

Sister Record, Sister Bills, {J}, Sister Pito
We have had a lot of unplanned service opportunities this week. The other day we were able to help a woman carry her groceries in and ended up teaching her a lesson. She was very kind, but not interested. We felt impressed to invite her to be baptized. So we did, and she declined, saying that she has already been baptized in her church. It was neat to explain to her the doctrine of the priesthood and how Christ was baptized. Even though she declined, the spirit was very strong. Our purpose is to "invite others to come unto Christ through [the doctrine of Christ]". The key word is invite. I'm grateful for our Savior, Jesus Christ and how he invites me each of us to come unto him.

I love you all! Thanks for all you do.

Sincerely,
Sister Record

P.S. Just so you know, I'm going to record myself singing a song and send it to you. Possibly today, but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance.

And Their Box Shall Never Fail

Area: Serenada/Georgetown
Companion: Sister Raelynn Pito
Companion: Sister Rachel Bills

Good morning!
Sister Record, Sister Bills and Sister Pito

This week has been such an incredible week full of miracles and growth! This work is truly the Lords work.

One of the subtle miracles I've noticed this week is that we have not run out of copies of the Book of Mormon. Lately we've felt inspired to hand our more copies of the Book of Mormon. A couple weeks ago we were almost out of them. We asked our district leader for some of theirs. The gave us a stack of about 20. Throughout this week I kept wondering how many we had left because we were bound to be out of them at any moment. We just kept handing them out without worrying about it. Yesterday I saw that we still have a lot left. In my mind I was thinking, "that can't be though, because we didn't have very many to begin with." Interesting... I'm still not sure how to explain that, but I do know that the Lords work will always move forward unhindered. And every single time we go to get another Book of Mormon there is a big stack of them and were able to give one out to each person that we feel inspired to.

Yesterday we had so many lessons in both areas. One of them was with a woman who we've met several times. Each time she was busy and not super interested. This time we came to her door and asked if she had a few minutes we could come in and share a message of hope with her. She agreed and let us in. Initially she was totally against the Book of Mormon and the Prophet, Joseph Smith. She had so many objections, all of which could be answered. However, we didn't jump right into answering them, knowing that we needed the spirit. We showed her the "he lives" video and that changed the environment.

Because He Lives

The Holy Ghost was so strong as we testified of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, completely illuminating any doubts she had. Her heart softened, and she listened intently. She then committed to read the Book of Mormon and pray to find out if it is true, and we got a return appointment. It was amazing the change of heart she had after that! We were so bubbly after that lesson that we sang hymn after hymn in the car on the way to our next destination. That was one of many miraculous lessons we have had this week.

I've been thinking about an experience I had a couple months before I left for my mission. I was sitting in a mission prep class when something the teacher said caused me to deeply reflect on my commitment to serve a mission. I wondered, if I knew before leaving that not a single door would open for me, that I would never see someone come and be baptized, and that each companion would be totally opposite from my personality, would I still go? Would I still choose to go even if I knew that all I would face was rejection? I pondered on that for some time, and came to the absolute conclusion that I would. Why? Because I had felt of the redeeming power of the atonement and wanted to share the great joy of the restored gospel with others. I knew that even if that were the case, I would be satisfied in knowing that I was serving the Lord. The spirit then bore witness to me that that would not be the case. That the gifts God has given me would be used to touch the hearts of many.

That decision I made proved to be an important one. I had an opportunity to renew my commitment with the Lord as I stood in testimony meeting and testified. The spirit filled my being as my mouth opened and the words of eternal life proceeded forth. Almost without realizing it I declared the truth, "If it were not true, I would not be here. I give my life, and will continue to give my life for this cause." I was overcome with emotion when I realized that the very words coming out of my mouth were a direct answer to my prayers, a renewal of my commitment to the Lord and his work. I am here because this is the truth. "I know it. I live it. I love it."

Before my mission, I thought I knew the gospel. I didn't. It wasn't until I was consistently teaching and testifying of the principles that I really understood and gained a knowledge of his gospel. There is power in bearing our testimonies. When we don't feel like sharing our testimonies, or when we think we're not strong enough to do it, that is when we need to the most. Because it is then that the spirit can bear witness not only to those listening, but to our own hearts.

Now, what is a testimony? Well, it isn't telling a story for 10 minutes. It isn't listing our blessings. Both of those things are very good and important to do. But they are not testimonies. We will not understand the gospel until we truly understand what a testimony is, and share it. A testimony is a declaration of truth. The shorter and more clearly stated it is, the more powerful it is for the spirit to testify to each heart, including our own.

I testify with everything that I am that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. The people in it were real people. And the message contained within is of Christ and of eternity. Jesus is the Christ. Through him, I have changed. Through him, I continue to change. He is the light, life, and hope of the world. He is my strength. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the Lord's kingdom on the Earth. In it is found the fullness of his gospel and his restored priesthood. God loves me, and he loves each of his children. These things I know of a surety, through the power of the Holy Ghost. I testify of these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Love,
Sister Record

"Decisions Determine Our Destiny"

Area: Serenada
Companion: Sister Raelynn Pito

We learn from President Thomas S. Monson that "decisions determine our destiny". The decisions we make truly do have a lasting impact on our lives, our families lives, and the lives of those we come in contact with.

I'd like to take a moment to pay tribute to my Grandma Record. Yesterday Sister Pito and I got to teach the Beehives (young woman ages 12-13) on strengthening our testimony. I felt impressed to share with them a bit of my Grandmothers story of faith. So I've been thinking a lot about her. I hope she doesn't mind that I share this. My Grandma came from a broken home. Things were rough and she didn't feel a whole lot of love. If I remember correctly, around the age of 12 she kicked out of her home. Life was full of uncertainty for her. Never sure of where to turn for support or love. She married at a young age (15), and had my Dad shortly after (16). I can only imagine the sadness and inadequacy she felt. When she was about 26 or so, missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints came and taught her. They showed her a new way of life. They helped her understand more deeply God's love for her, and introduced her to eternal, restored truths that would not only forever change her life, but thousands of lives. Though it was an emotional ride, she made the decision to be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. She paved the way for her children to have a better life. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She raised her children with faith and love.

My life would be very different if it weren't for her. Because of the amazing woman she was and is, I am here today. My family is strong in the gospel and sealed for all eternity. I am here, on a mission, doing the Lords work, and being an instrument in his hands in touching lives. I am forever grateful for Elder Schmidt, one of the missionaries who taught her, and who baptized her. If he had not served a mission, my family wouldn't have the blessings we have. I'm sure that I would not be serving this mission. Thank you Grandma. And thank you Brother Schmidt, wherever you are.

Every decision we make literally has an impact on thousands. Alma 26:22 says "Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing -...it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance..."

This transfer I've learned a lot about who I am. There have been some growing pains, so to speak. Sister Pito and I have learned so much about communication. Ha ha... We love each other, but being as different as we are did require some effort in working together, and some growing pains. She is so incredible. I love her faith. I'm beginning to see the beautiful things that have happened in the Serenada ward.

We've been sharing a Mormon message lately called "The Hope of God's Light". It's about a man who didn't believe in God. But then his life came crashing down.

Once again, decisions determine destiny. I'm eternally grateful for my decision to serve a mission. I love the Lord, and I love this work!

All in!

Love,
Sister Record

P.S. Transfer calls are coming this Sunday... We're pretty sure something's going to change. We won't speculate, buuut I'm just sayin' I've been here for three transfers and Sister Pito's been here for one. So we'll see.

Also, we should be getting some form of technology really soon... :) More news to come.

Love y'all!

Old Companions, New Purpose

Area: Serenada
Companion: Sister Raelynn Pito

Good afternoon!

You'll never believe who my new companion is. Sister Raelynn Pito. Sound familiar? She was my MTC companion! :D At transfer meeting when we found out that we're companions we were sooo excited! Before the meeting started we were talking and said, "what if we're companions?" Ha ha.. I waved it off, saying that I didn't think they'd put her in an old people area after being in YSA areas her whole mission. We didn't think much about it after. When it was announced that we would be together we both laughed and exclaimed, "No way." We gave each other a big hug, and we seriously couldn't stop giggling about it throughout the day.

I don't know if I ever told y'all, but Sister Pito and I butted heads a lot in the MTC. Her and I were so different and always disagreeing on how to do things. By the end of our stay at the MTC we loved each other and settled differences. We learned so much from each other. It is because of her that I learned how to loosen up and have fun. She changed my life. From me, she learned how to be more obedient. It's amazing how much we needed each other. Even with the personality differences, we would never end a night on a bad note. The most powerful moments I had with her were when we knelt together in prayer. That is when we came together and grew in unity. After one disastrous attempt, we learned how to teach together with the spirit. I can't tell y'all how much I love Sister Pito, and how many fond memories I have of the MTC.

Our first evening back together as companions was great, and very eye opening to see how far we've both come. We demonstrated the message of the Restoration short and powerfully for the members who fed us dinner. We had no chance to role play beforehand or anything. We just did it. And wow... The transformation is drastic. We taught with clarity and perfect unity. We are both more able to teach the doctrines. Whereas before, we didn't really know how to express the truths we had always known.

Sister Pito is such an incredible example of dedication and determination. She works hard and knows her purpose. She has changed. As have I. This is such a tender mercy to be companions again. I always hoped we would, but didn't think it would actually happen.

This weekend we had a really neat experience stopping by a man Sister Rowley and I met a little over a week ago. His name is {B}. When Sister Rowley and I met him he was busy doing yard work and wasn't super interested, but not closed off either. He said we could come back on a weekend. He wasn't in our plans that day, but as Sister Pito and I were going to the street for someone else I felt like we shouldn't go to the person we planned and remembered spur of the moment that {B} was on that street and said we could come back. I know that was a prompting from the spirit. We went and showed him the "Because He Lives" video. We could tell that he was really feeling the spirit as he watched. I don't remember exactly what we said about it, but he ended up telling us about some hard things he has been going through. We shared something about the restored gospel that I don't fully recall. He was obviously touched. I asked if we could pray for him. One of the things I asked in the prayer is that he would be able to feel God's love for him and know that this visit was not a coincidence. He was on the verge of breaking down in tears after that prayer. I could tell he was holding back until he got inside. The spirit was undeniable. He told us we could come back the next week. This man is being prepared. He has been humbled through trials of life, and ready to hear what ever the Lord might tell him. I'm grateful to be an instrument in the Lords hands in helping his children come unto him. It is truly rewarding.

Because He Lives

Yesterday we witnessed what I felt was a small miracle. During sacrament meeting there was a special musical number composed of all who desired to come forward and join in singing "High on the Mountain Top." It was beautiful to watch people come forward voluntarily, and give of themselves in such an unexpected way. The choir was unpracticed, and perhaps "unprofessional" in the worlds eyes. They weren't all on tune. Some were singing louder than others. But it was the most Heavenly sound I've heard and scene I've witnessed all week. It was as though angels were declaring glad tidings of joy. I felt a wave of emotion at the sight. Brother Karchaske, who is our ward mission leader as well as the ward choir director, does things spontaneously. I love that about him. He gets it. He is a great singer himself. But he understands the power of selfless service and the spirit of music.

This ward is an amazing ward! I love them all so much. I love my mission, despite or even perhaps because of the challenges that come. It is a great joy to be on the Lord's errand. No amount of hardship or trial will sway me from serving him who saved us all, and who descended below us all.

Thank you for your love and support. I know this cause it true. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

With love,
Sister Record

Ups and Downs

Area: Serenada
Companion: Sister Melissa Rowley

Good morning!

Right now, it is pouring rain outside where I'm at. There is so much and it hasn't stopped. It's kind of fun.

You'll never guess what happened yesterday. Well, actually if you think really hard you probably can guess. Considering this is dog number 4 that I've caught on my mission. (Dog number 2 for Sister Rowley and I). Ha ha! Once again, we were talking to a man at his door and his little dog took off down the road. This situation was almost identical to the last dog we caught. He told us not to worry and that his son would go catch him. With all the distraction, we didn't get a chance to share a restored truth with him. We drove off and decided to look for the dog. I prayed that we would be able to catch it so that we could go back and talk to that man again. Within 1 minute we saw the dog coming towards us. I told Sister Rowley to jump out of the car as soon as I stopped. She did, and was able to catch it. We brought the dog back, and were able to share some restored truth with that man. He was really nice and we were glad to have another chance. Stay tuned for the next time we catch a dog... :D

Yesterday I got to talk in sacrament meeting with a return sister missionary and her younger brother who is preparing to serve a mission. It was a really sweet experience. The topic was how the youth program prepares us for the future.

This week our investigator is really progressing! She accepted the invitation to be baptized and even accepted a date. We've found that for her, teaching the lessons by reading about it in the Book of Mormon is helping her learn the most. I'll keep y'all updated on the date as soon as it gets closer.

This has been a rough week. It has been full of ups and downs... and downs... and ups... The Saturday before last I was starting to get sick, and was sick for about four days. I had some sort of cold that wouldn't go away and had to go to the doctor just to make sure everything was good. They said I was fine, which was kind of annoying since clearly I was sick. I started feeling better that evening. All week has been a struggle. Just trying to stay focused and upbeat.

On Thursday during weekly planning Sister Rowley and I had a real good talk about some goals and plans for this transfer. We were very prayerful about setting a goal for the number of baptisms we plan to have this transfer. We came to a unified decision. We have both been lacking some umph, so I was very up front about how it's been a rough week, but it's okay. We can move on with a fresh perspective. It was much needed. I was feeling a lot better by then health wise, and I really felt pumped to go out and talk to everyone and invite everyone we teach to come unto Christ through baptism. That afternoon was fantastic. We had a spirit-led lesson with a less active woman. We read Alma 32. She was baptized about a year ago and hasn't read the Book of Mormon or been active since. As we read and discussed how faith is like a seed, her countenance changed and the spirit filled the room. She began to understand. We showed love for her and invited her to come back to church. She committed to and as we left, she still had her Book of Mormon open in front of her and seemed as though she was going to continue reading after we left. What a beautiful miracle. Especially considering the challenge it is for her to read. With the time change, she ended up going to another ward. But did come! And stayed all three hours! :)

"Come Unto Christ", Margaret D. Nadauld, General Conference, April 1998

That determination and commitment has been put to the test again and again. It's hard when no body wants to even hear what we have to say, even for a moment. It's even harder when someone listens for a moment, but we fall short in opening our mouth. I feel exactly like Enoch who bowed himself before the Lord and said, Why is it I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad. And all the people hate me, for I am slow of speech. Wherefore am I thy servant? (See Moses 6:31-32). The Lords response in verse 32 has given me the drive to keep going. He promises Enoch that he will give him utterance and that no man shall pierce him.

It's hard to be in a new area, and to have someone bitterly reject something that is so dear to me. Even with the trials, I have found great peace through prayer and within the pages of the Book of Mormon. I know that everything happens for a reason. Even though we faced so much rejection and I've felt inadequate, I know that the Savior's grace makes all the difference. He gives us strength beyond our own, and I feel that each and every day.

Miracles happen every day even when things are a little stormy. Once again "gratitude transcends whatever is happening around us. It surpasses disappointment, discouragement, and despair." -President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

I love you all!

Sincerely,
Sister Record

I Have Truly Felt Your Prayers

Area: Converse
Companion: Sister Victoria Foster

It has been an incredible week! Wow! I have truly felt your prayers, and have seen many miracles. I loved seeing y'all on Christmas. I still can't believe how much Eric has changed... And the Popi [the family dog] is still alive. Ha ha.

Silly Sister Missionaries
The day before Christmas Eve we were walking down a street to a woman we had planned to see. I felt the distinct impression to go to the house with the giant chicken trailer. (It was a food truck with a chicken on it, and it was definitely attention grabbing) Ha ha. I waved it off at first because it was a little out of the way, but the impression came back. So we went to that house and ended up meeting a Father. He was very open and listened intently as we taught him the Restoration on his doorstep. He and his kids were wrapping presents and cleaning the house before his wife got home, but he stopped and listened for a good 5 minutes. He had never heard of Joseph Smith or the Book of Mormon, and he was so genuine in wanting to learn more. As we were about to finish, he had to get back to cleaning the house before his wife got home. He asked us if we could come back. Before we got too far, a lady (his aunt?) came out and asked what that guys name is again. We told her "Joseph Smith" and she thanked us. We got a little ways away when I felt that we needed to go back. In the rush, we had forgotten to give him a Book of Mormon. We walked back and gave him a Book of Mormon. We testified of it's truthfulness. And told him that if he wants to learn about Joseph Smith before we come back, to read this book. He was so genuine in thanking us. I was just amazed at how the spirit led us to him. This family is so prepared!

That same day we had a lesson with [S]. We taught him the principle of fasting and how it blesses our lives. We invited him to fast and pray about a baptism date. He committed to and also decided on his own to fast about another issue he's been struggling with. We saw him a few days after and followed up on how it went. He said he did it, but still hadn't gotten a real clear answer. He expressed that he knows God will answer in his own time, and that he would not lose faith. On Sunday the lesson in the Gospel Principles class was on exaltation. It was so good, and the spirit was so strong as we talked about the sacred ordinances that must happen for us to ultimately reach exaltation. I turned to him after and asked, "What did you learn today." He paused for a moment and said, "I need to be baptised". We had a good talk on how he had just received an answer to his fasting and prayers. He had the important aha moment that he has been waiting for, and he recognized that God answered him. He also recognized the answer to his other concern that he had been fasting about. I asked him if he would be baptised this Saturday, and he said he would! I know that miracles happen, that God is in charge, and I know that he can be baptised this Saturday. If he is not, he will be very soon. But we will be doing everything we can to help him move in that direction. It was such a neat experience. I get really excited and feel calm, peaceful chills every time I think about it! :D

Christmas was wonderful. We ate breakfast and skyped. Later that day we visited several people. Two of them were home bound women. We sang Christmas songs for them, and shared "He is the Gift". We had a wonderful Christmas dinner. A friend of the family we ate with shared her conversion story. She is one of those incredible miracles that new the truth right when she heard it and was baptised immediately. She has an incredible journey. I have come to know that the Lord really is preparing people right now, in this area. (See Alma 13:24) He is indeed preparing his children in every part of the world.

Thank you for all your prayers. I really mean it when I say I feel them. I feel an increase of strength and capacity to do the Lord's work. I love being here. I love being a missionary. I love the Lord. I am humbled to feel his enabling power each and every day. He is my rock. I am so grateful for my family. I love you all so much. But I love the Saviour more.

All in!

Sincerely,
Sister Record

P.S. I hope y'all haven't stopped praying for missionary opportunities. ;)

I Braced Myself

Area: Converse
Companion: Sister Sarah Felix

Transfer calls came... I am staying in Converse and Sister Felix is leaving. I have to admit, it's been hard. All week we kind of already knew that something was going to change, and luckily I had some time to accept it before we received the call. :) I feel ready and at peace now, but my heart definitely needed to adjust to the idea. It's still adjusting. We actually thought that I would leave and she would stay, so we weren't expecting that at all. I look forward to next transfer, and I am glad that I'll be here longer. We are finding so many people.

Sister Annelise Record
Since we went on a lot of exchanges this transfer I got to drive in my area when Sister Farmer came to Converse. This week, there was a squirrel in the middle of the road. There was nothing I could do to avoid it, so I did exactly what I was taught. I braced myself, held firmly to wheel, and ran over it... Now I have ran over an animal. Wow, what a wonderful way to start off my letter. Ha ha!

We had a wonderful lesson with a man who has been investigating the church for about 16 years. His wife is an active member of our ward. We sang a song, and read some scriptures on baptism. It was powerful. We invited him to be baptized and he said he would really pray about what day to do it. He said he feels like it's soon.

There is a woman named [M] who we've been trying to contact for months. She was a member referral but was always never home or really busy. We didn't think she was even interested. A couple weeks ago we stopped by and of course, she was really busy, but we asked if we could give her a Book of Mormon. A couple days ago, we were driving with a member (because our car is in the shop) and only stopped by her house because we happened to be by her. We didn't think she would be home, but she ended up letting us right in. She is very animated and loves to talk. She invited us to sit down and said, "Let me go grab my book!". She had already been reading the introduction and testimony of the witnesses on her own! She was talking to us like she knew us. Sister Felix and I were quite surprised. We taught her the Restoration and she agreed readily with everything. We also taught her how to ask God questions, because she is so good at praying, but felt really uncomfortable asking him questions. It was neat to see her perspective change. We went over the very next day and the lesson was even more powerful. Her heart is incredibly open and receptive. We showed her the "He is the Gift" video, and discussed priesthood authority and the restoration with a special emphasis on baptism. We asked her how it makes her feel to know that God's authority is on the Earth today. This was her response. Quote: "It makes me feel that I am in the wrong place." She went on to talk about how comforting it is for her to know that she can depend on God and his servants. She said that she needs to get in the right place. She has such a desire to grow closer to God, and feels the spirit when we teach. We invited her to embrace the gift of Jesus Christ and be baptized by one holding His authority. She almost accepted, but said that she'll need to think about it. I feel very confident that she will accept. She accepted the invitation to come to church, and to the relief society activity. And she already has some member fellowship. It's just so incredible! I'm really glad I'll be here another transfer to watch her progress.

We had such a neat lesson with the [G] family. We went over the Restoration again using the 20 minute Restoration DVD. The visual of the movie seemed to click well with them. At the end of the DVD I felt the spirit so strong in my heart testifying to me that these things are true. I felt tears come to my eyes as the spirit enveloped me. I felt moved upon to testify. And so I did with all my heart. I know that Joseph Smith was and is a prophet of God, and he was called to Restore Jesus Christ's gospel and to the Earth.

We've been using "He is the Gift" a lot. It touches everyone who watches it. This Christmas season is such a beautiful time to reflect on our relationship with the Savior.

This truly has been an incredible week. I love you all!

Sincerely,
Sister Record

P.S. It does not feel like December here. It feels like September. Some days feel like October. I don't mind though. :)
